Isometric Drawing Plans and Elevations Tes

Projections

This topic is all about understanding 2nd projections of 3D objects. Specifically, there are 3 projections of a 3D that we will consider:

  • The plan – what the shape looks like from above
  • The side elevation – what the shape looks similar from the side
  • The forepart summit – what the shape looks like from the front.

Plans and Elevations of a 3D Shape

Take a look at the square-based pyramid shown.

plans and elevations pyramid

Plan

The plan is the view from above. This would show a square with one line going from each corner to the centre.

Side Elevation

If nosotros await from the side, it would look like a triangle.

Front Elevation

This is the view you lot would encounter directly from the front. If you imagine standing in front of the pyramid and looking at it, it would expect like a triangle.

Example 1: Drawing Plans and Elevations

Depict a plan, a front pinnacle, and a side elevation of the 3D shape beneath.

drawing plans and elevations

This is a typical example of a shape you would be given in a question on this topic – i made of a series of one cm blocks. It allows us to clearly get the dimensions of our projections right.

Plan

This would show an L-shape very clearly – 3 blocks long and 2 blocks wide (at the base of operations of the L).

Side tiptop

This would but show the base of the L – ii side-by-side i cm blocks.

Front elevation

This would show the front end of the Fifty – 3 side-past-side 1 cm blocks.

And then, the resulting 3 projections look similar:

Case 2: Interpreting Plans and Elevations

Use the plan, forepart elevation and side elevation shown beneath to construct a drawing of the 3D shape described.

interpreting plans and elevations

To practise this, we'll think about each projection one-by-one and consider what it ways.

Plan – Shows the general shape of the object (a P shape, sort of).

Side tiptop – We can see that just the third square has two levels

Front elevation –  From this we tin can encounter that only the left side has two levels.

From this we can depict the following 3D shape.

Instance Questions

Every bit we tin run across, the shape is one cake high and is the shape of a cross, or letter of the alphabet x. As a consequence, the plan is going to exist the shape of a cross, and both elevations volition merely exist ane block high. Furthermore, nosotros can see that in looking at both from the front and from the side, the shape in question is 3 blocks wide, so the resulting elevations will both be iii blocks wide and 1 cake loftier. All iii projections are shown below.

projections plans and elevations example 1 answer

Firstly, looking at the programme nosotros tin can see that the shape is 1 block wide, and 4 blocks long. And then, from the front end elevation we can come across that the shape is 2 blocks high, merely at both ends the shape doesn't actually touch the floor – those two terminate blocks are just attached to the top row. In this particular case, we actually don't need the side pinnacle to complete the picture, the showtime two are enough. So, the resulting 3D shape looks similar:

The plan should prove the shape from directly above. From this viewpoint it will exist three units across (bold the small square is i unit) hence it volition wait like:

The side elevation will view the shape as 3 units loftier:

projections plans and elevations example 3 answer side elevation

The program should show the shape from straight to a higher place. From this viewpoint information technology will be three units (assuming the pocket-size foursquare is 1 unit) beyond hence will look like:

The side elevation will view the shape as two units high:

All 3 projections are as seen beneath.
